The Painterly Portrait Course is demonstrated in the medium of chalk-based soft pastels, so the demonstrations will use this medium throughout the course. However, the lessons taught begin in sketching and charcoal, then move to paintings, and draw upon the rich tradition of oil painting for the techniques that are taught in a painterly approach.
Those who work in acrylic or oil and use a direct “alla prima” brushwork style of painting will relate well to the lessons and teachings in this course, and can absolutely benefit from the solid foundational principles that are communicated throughout.
Design principles, color theory, measuring and capturing a likeness, all are directly relatable to other painting mediums.
What it won’t help with: Those who work in watercolor may struggle to apply the lessons due to the transparent medium, so the process is different and not directly relatable. Note that there is no specific color mixing support for oil painters, as pastel is a layering medium in stick form.
Many students have shared with us that the course has helped them with their work in other mediums as well.
“The medium is pastel, but much of what you learn about seeing and creating will serve you well in any other media as well.” - Dorian
